Language in Action
In collaboration with Spanish universities, local cultural institutions, artist and experts, JHU Madrid has designed a number of activities, cultural visits and field trips that open a door to Spanish history, culture, gastronomy and traditions. Students will learn about the past of Spain while they visit and contemplate relevant sites in Spanish history. Below, we include some day and weekend trips.
Day Trips
JHU Madrid organizes several day trips to different important cities around Madrid to study significant episodes in Spanish history. We´ll visit Toledo to explore religious diversity in the Middle Ages. We will spend a day in the city of Segovia to study the influence of the Roman Empire in the Peninsula and Europe. El Escorial is another site that we will visit to analyze how political ideology is articulated in civil and religious architecture during two different periods in Spanish history: the monarchy of Phillip II (1556-1598) and the regime of the dictator Francisco Franco (1939-1975). We will also participate in a walking tour of the city of Madrid to learn about the foundation of the city in the 9th century and its great flourishment in the second half of the 16thcentury when it becomes the permanent capital of the Empire. Check out this website for more ideas!
Weekend Trips
All programs include one weekend where we explore a unique region of Spain. You will experience its rich history, gastronomy and urban planning.
Previous trips have included:
- Córdoba and Granada (Andalucía)
- Santiago de Compostela (Galicia)
Language Exchange Program
The JHU Madrid Language Exchange program serves as a dynamic and immersive way for students who seek to enhance their linguistic proficiency while diving into the cultural exploration of their new home, Madrid. This initiative is especially beneficial for study abroad students, since it offers a unique opportunity to not only refine their language skills, but also to forge meaningful connections with local peers.
By actively engaging in conversations and cultural exchanges, participants gain a deeper understanding of the Spanish language in its real-life context, honing their communication skills in an authentic and interactive setting. This experiential learning approach goes beyond the confines of traditional language classes, offering our students a richer, more nuanced appreciation of Spain’s language, culture, and local people, contributing to a more profound and holistic international education experience.
